How Dare We!

“My message is that we’ll be watching you. This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us young people for hop. How dare you?”

Greta Thunberg

Greta is commendable in both her message and her passion but teachers everywhere these days have a hard enough time with children challenging them. In her statement she says she should be in school but she made a choice but, who paid for her travel? Are her parents with her? They are supporting her in this journey?

In 2018 she decided not to go to school in protest about wildfires during the hottest summer Sweden had experienced in 262 years. She had just started the ninth grade. Who allowed this? Australia has very recently experienced a disaster which might have been caused by lightening, arson, grinding, camping or possibly even a discarded cigarette! There, there is no sign of children going on strike or giving blame.

Although, I’m sure Greta has plenty to say about it!

The worst ever wildfires in the history of the U.S. was the Peshtigo Fires in 1871 and were the most devastating in the country’s history. 1.2 million acres of foliage was destroyed and 1.200 people died in Wisconsin. Children, at that time in history, were not lucky enough to attend school and were, most likely, resilient enough to be out helping to put out the fires blazing upon the fields and land were they worked.

Children today are bombarded with images and information which they do not have the maturity, or developed, cerebral capacity to understand or process, let alone deal with. Pornography is desensitizing love and attitudes towards sex. Girls have anal sex with boys because they think it is a form of contraception. They might not get pregnant but there could be an STD waiting on the timetable for them.

Like Greta they are suffering from anxiety, depression and we need to start to take back control and let them be children, take care of them. They have been given too much too soon and don’t know what to do with it! Since the introduction of Smartphones children have experienced higher levels of stress and become obsessed with ‘having’…everything without any effort whatsoever.

Let them play outside, laugh, run, dig for worms instead of Googling information on…

What to do? What does it mean? How should I look? What is the answer!?

What Rousseau stated in 1762 was as relevant then as it is today!

“Man in the state of nature is, like animals, equal to his desires in the sense that he does not desire things for which he has no need, or need things for which he has no desire. His consciousness of the world around him, in other words, is efficiently tailored to meeting his needs for survival and reproduction and is not enslaved by the kinds of desire in which today’s society specialises: objects and accoutrements whose value exists only in their power to make others see us in a certain light. Modern man, Rousseau argues, is the victim of a divided subjectivity, spreading disorder and unhappiness while convinced that he’s acting in his own interests.”

by Jean-Jacques Rousseau,

By giving them everything means they strive for nothing and we are stoking the flames of mediocrity…that is our mistake!
